I’d like to thank you all so much for visiting my new website. This has been a passion project for me for quite some time. It took a while to get here, but if not for the bumps in the road, this project would have never been completed. As the saying goes, one door closes and another opens. With some patience and perseverance Casey’s Sports Collectibles has arrived!
My passion for sports started early as a kid like most of you. For me, it began back in the fall of 1976 when the game of football was introduced to me by my stepfather. He was a die-hard Minnesota Vikings fan, so watching Fran Tarkenton and the Purple People Eaters was the Sunday ritual. It only grew from there - watching other legends like Walter Payton, Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Terry Bradshaw, Lynn Swann and my childhood hero Randy Gradishar. I absolutely loved football. That turned into playing it with my childhood buddies, as I think back to so many glorious afternoons where the days were endless. Game after game, running like the wind with enthusiasm that became a competitive bonfire in our own little neighborhood in Great Falls, Montana. The Montana sky would capture our young hearts and minds, fueling our football adventures with its background of magnificence. We painted our childhood stories across that sky. Stories of heroes. Sports heroes we created within ourselves. Sailing that nerf football back and forth, drawing up plays on our palm with the trace of a finger making you feel as if you were getting ready to play in a Super Bowl. In our minds – we were. It was never enough until dinnertime of course. That was simply pause to what seemed like the endless game that we all loved so much.
And then it was boxing, then basketball, then baseball, then hockey. A fire had been fully ignited and when I discovered they made these pieces of cardboard that had the athlete’s pictures on the front and their statistics on the back – I became addicted. Yes – sports cards were the first collectibles for me like many of you. I couldn’t get enough. My passion for collecting went to another level when I wrote my favorite team, the Denver Broncos in 1977, asking for an autograph from Randy Gradishar. One of the best linebackers of the 70’s. He was a tackling machine. Weeks went by which became months. Nothing…
And then – coming home from school one day to discover a large envelope with the Broncos logo across the top laying on our kitchen counter where my mom had left it. I couldn’t believe it! They actually wrote back! I carefully opened it. This was the moment of truth. And there it was – a letter from the Broncos with Randy Gradishar’s autographed rookie card nestled in between the letter and a few stickers. I may have peed a little from excitement. If I may add – I was a hit at 2nd grade show and tell!
We all have those childhood memories with those moments of magic. It’s what collecting has always been about for me. Recapturing some of that childhood magic by never losing the kid at heart. That childhood magic is the inspiration behind Casey’s Sports Collectibles.
